Five Steps of Healthy Eating: Step 1

Step 1: Eat Whole Foods 😋
This includes eating all parts of food as close to its natural state as possible. As the old adage goes, if a monkey doesn’t peel it, we shouldn’t either. 🙉Did you know that the intestines are a 30-foot muscular tube that needs regular exercise to work properly? Yikes! 😮

How can we keep it working properly? By eating foods as close to their natural state as possible, in particular foods that grow from bushes or trees or in the ground.

This includes whole grains. Whole grains are intact kernel form and have 3 layers.

  • 1st: The outer fibrous bran which has enteric coating for time release digestion of the inner layers. This layer is the one most often removed yet its the one that helps us feel full longer and helps keep our intestines working properly. 👍🏻
  • 2nd: The intermediate starchy sperm layer 👌
  • 3rd: The inner nutrient rich germ 👏🏻

Did you know that white rice is actually brown rice that is milled and polished, a process that removes the prayer and the endosperm layers?Whole grains are not ground whole wheat flour, although that is better than white flour. Why?

When we grind intact kernels into flour it starts to oxidize and the nutrient content begins to decline. The surface area of each starch layer dramatically increases leading to higher glycemic index which in turn:

  • increases serum insulin
  • increases fast storage
  • increases production of adipose based inflammatory mediators
